Get a real nature experience on this day tour going off the tracks for great views and musk ox sightseeing.
In a landscape with a great view to the Ice Cap, mountains and lakes, we go for the great experience close to musk oxen. We begin our hike at the end of the dirt road at 300 meters above sea level with views to the river Qinnguata Kuussua and the Greenlandic Ice Cap. We might already see musk oxen from here which will decide which route we go. Generally we go East towards the mountain Tasersuatsiaap Kinginnera. From the foot of the mountain, we go down the slopes towards lake Tasersuatsiaq where we can be lucky to see the white arctic snow hare. By the lake we pass the remains from the Inuit Culture who had their summer hunting grounds in this area. We cook a meal on an open fire using local meat such as musk ox, caribou or arctic snow hare. Along the shores, or on the lake itself in winter and early spring, we hike to the dirt road at the Western end of the lake.
We always eat the locally hunted meat from musk ox, reindeer and snow hare - usually we also supply with whatever herbs or mushrooms we can harvest in nature.
Distance hiking: 10-14 km (6-8 miles).
One meal and transfer from and to Kangerlussuaq Vandrehjem (Youth Hostel) or from Butik Frydkjaer which is 200 meters from Kangerlussuaq Hotel and Polar Lodge is included.
